SATA II drives on SATA I controllers

Many controllers, especially those from VIA (my Abit KV7 and ASUS boards for example, which have the VIA VT6420 chip) won't
recognise newer SATAII drives immediately on connection.

This is expected and mandated behaviour so all isn't lost and your drive isn't DOA. It just needs an extra jumper
to put it in 1.5G SATA I mode. This is usually alongside the power connector on the back of the drive itself.

Choosing a flavour

First piece of advice, especially if you're new to Linux and UNIX in general: Choose the distribution that suits your purposes and one you feel comfortable with, and stick at it.

If you're looking at a server, then you'll want to avoid desktop-oriented distributions. The *BSDs (Especially FreeBSD) or CentOS are good server choices. Fedora and SuSE are others that are very capable after the extras have been pared away

Handling root's mail

By default - and this is sane despite what some may say - cron jobs, Logwatch etc. will mail output to root, but on a newly-built system this will actually deliver to “root” - which is a security risk if there's a .forward with a pipe or script.
